Two Different Styles: Vee Jay -- J30 and Shock -- WL30

VEE JAY is a J30 [Fractional rig] with diesel inboard converted for cruising with roller furling forestay, Tides Marine Strong Track for the main, and self tailing sheet winches. The genny is roller furled during spinnaker runs. Spinnaker is launched and doused through the forward hatch. OEM cruising interior includes two burner stove with oven. The hull number is 505 and is a late design 1985 J30 with cockpit backrests, and 5 instead of 6 berths below. Vee Jay was trucked down from Newport, RI in Sept. 2007. Skipper Vic has owned it since 1985 and sails out of Newport.

SHOCK is a Wavelength 30 [Masthead rig] with outboard engine and standard racing configuration including running backstays. The genny is dropped during spinnaker runs. Spinnaker is launched from deck bag and retrieved though companionway. Original OEM interior has been optimized for racing and the original inboard diesel removed. Shock has always been in Florida and had a solid racing career in Naples for many years. Skipper Dave acquired it in 2008, but has a long track record of racing his Cherubini Raider on the Chesapeake Bay.

Currently both boats are evenly matched. Races are won or lost mostly by crew and/or skipper errors.

Both boats are in "crew training" mode. The 2008/2009 winter season was the first year for one-on-one training with both boats doing tune up sessions as well as racing the Naples/Marco circuit. There is not much qualified racing crew available in the Naples area, and as such both boats rotate through different crew people depending on who is in town. Crew also may move from one boat to the other to broaden their experience. About 10% of the crew is year round ... with the balance spending anywhere from 2-3 days to 6 months in the sailing program.
